We leave the Wildcoast and head down to St Francis Bay, renowned for a surfing spot called Bruce’s beauties, and that evening take a sunset cruise.
"Now, this is day twenty something of our 30 day epic four and a half thousand kilometre road trip along the southern coast of Africa, and you know... it’s been a long road, and by now, I guess you have figured out some of them are really cooked and in a sense, would you expect anything less from us?"
Mirelle: "We’re just the, we’re the cooked people; every now and then we’re fried."
"We, uh, just got off a 9 hour... bus trip down from the Transkei. We’re all a bit glum. It was... uh, very hard leaving. It’s a very special place, so we’re hoping that Kipper, from the Kromme River Expeditions, upon which we now arrive into sunset, is going to help us feel a bit more happy. By the way, this is a Tequila Sunset, Vodka Sunset? Tequila Sunset? Gord’s (Gordon’s)?"
Friends: "Cheers, cheers."
Tanya: "To long, happy lives."
In the morning, Justin demonstrates how to make a “Bunny Chow”, we commandeer a beautiful home where we all feel the need to dress up and Justin makes grilled Calamari tubes stuffed with a tomato risotto and squid ink Basmati Rice. Oh yeah, and Gordon makes cocktails and Fran, a sublime Crème Brule.
"I’m going to make you a... typical surfer’s chow. And it’s a very straightforward one… All you need is a packet of slap (soggy) chips. Slap (soggy), by the way is Afrikaans English for verlep (soggy), which is Afrikaans English for... really soft, soggy chips. Now the beauty about a bunny chow is, all you do is rip out the insides... shove your chips in, you can also put a curry or something in. Close it up with your top... and you've got a bunny chow. Didn’t say it was nutritious...?"
Gordon: "Right guys, even though it’s raining outside today, um, we’re still going to be making some summer cocktails. We’re going to go for a different Daiquiri of sorts here:Some ice, do a big batch for everybody. What we got here? Ooh, good thing I caught that. Little bit of the, um, white rum. Dark rum. Beautiful, look at those lovely strawberries that they have out here. The secret ingredient, we’re not telling anybody what this is."
"This is my whole harem, and here we have Erik, the Eunuch, who looks after my harem. (Laughter). Right, so all that’s left with the risotto, is to stuff it into the calamari, into the squid. And it’s a beautiful tube; in fact they call it “The Seafarer’s Condom” (laughter). Does make sense, that’s about right. But any-case, all you have to do now is take ‘el spoon’ and slide it in (laughs). Hannah. Come. So you’re just going to take a portion of that."
"There you go. So Hannah will understand what I’m on about here... Now check at that, ahhh... Hannah, so what does that feel like?"
Hannah: "Very sensual... maybe?"
And dinner is served in our host’s home:
Gordon: "Cheers… and the meal was absolutely perfect. Congratulations."
