BED ON BRICKS was formed in February 2003 in the boerewors triangle - namely Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Cape Town, South Africa.

It was initiated by former Sons of Trout frontman Mike Hardy - and now comprises of Tim Rankin (drums), Dave van der Linden (guitar), Schalk van der Merwe (bass) and Mike (vocals/sax).

After 4 months of introductions and pleasantries, the band shuffled into the studio to record their first album Humanarium.

Extensive touring followed and before long the band notched up slots on most major music festivals around the country.

With an ever growing fan-base, bricks eagerly cruised back into the studio to record their second album If You See Kay.

Having secured support from the likes of Levis Original Music and distribution through SMD, Bed on Bricks has created a launching platform which will, no doubt, see them as one of the most promising and exciting new bands that South Africa has yet to offer!

photoAccording to murmurs on the streets, The Rudimentals are paving the way to a new South African sound. They have blended the essential, tried and trusted elements of Ska with both rural and urban African music. With its roots still firmly planted in the Jamaican dance halls of the 60's, the band have fused ingredients of the local, like Zimbabwean cultural music and Goema, with the familiar back beat of Ska. This contemporary combination makes the music both accessible and fresh. The wicked final product being African Ska.

Like Ska music itself, the band has a long and gregarious history, as one would expect from eight musicians, each with their own story to tell. The founding members of the band were bass player, Barry Clausen (a former member of Tundra, along with Damian Staz, now from Freshly Ground, and Namaqua), guitarist, Etienne Harris (Tundra), drummer, Duane Heydenrych and keyboard player, Milandro Mapengo. This crew met and glued with Zimbabwean talent Teboho (Teboes) Maidza, a born and bred artist who learned a trick or two from performing with the likes of Andy Brown and Oliver Madzukuzi. Out of this highly talented gathering rose The Rudimentals. Their first gig at the Jam, opening for Hog Hoggidy Hog, proved to all, including the band, that they have what it takes, not only to make accomplished and ripping music, but also to entertain and get an audience skanking like no other.

From here the tale unfolds at pace. Gathering momentum and an ever growing following, the band began to pop up all over the place to the delight of those watching. A fair way down this road to success and in true tradition of Ska bands the band then took on a three-piece brass section, all from The University of Cape Town Music College. Simon Bates (Masters graduate) as saxophonist, Jody Engelbrecht as trumpeter and Ross McDonald as trombonist together rounded off The Rudimentals with a fatter sound to an increasing fan base. At much the same time the band parted ways with Milandro and took on another skilful member, Dirk Meerkotter, and so The Rudimentals as they look today began to take the world by storm.

2003 saw the demand for an album, as an ever increasing fan base and interest widened. The appeal struck with their multi-racial line-up, highly infectious dance grooves and energetic stage presence struck out to win over fans every time they performed. With no album in the offing they managed to get invitations to perform on all major music festivals in and around Cape Town. The Rudimentals 2002 (left back): Ross Macdonald, Dirk Meerkotter, Barry Clausen, Jody Engelbrecht, Duane Heydenrych, (Left Front) Simon Bates, Teboho Maidza and Etienne Harris.

"More Fire" topped the SA Rock Digest charts and their first single, "Gangsta", enjoying extensive radio airplay on both national and regional radio stations and also topped the Mp3 charts, for most downloaded song. "Gangsta" managed to hold that position for seven consecutive weeks. A further single, "Noh TV", stormed the charts and soon attracted the attention of national television with its accompanying video, which managed to acquire a bronze National STONE award, for best directed video.

With an up on your bootstraps approach The Rudimentals set forth on their first national tour of South Africa, completely financed by the band themselves.

On the 24th of October 2003 launched their debut album, "More Fire", that was mainly a collection of songs they have been performing at their shows. Semantically, the content of The Rudimentals music deal with very real and distinctly African issues; ranging from the problems of Aids, drug abuse, gangsterism and woman and child abuse.

In the course of 2003 a ninth member joined The Rudimentals, in the form of ex-Louie R and The Jive guitarist, Michael Levy, filling the slot of lead guitarist. However, late 2004 saw the departure of long time Rudimental founder member and close friend, Barry Clausen, exchanging his rude boy apparel for greener pastures. With no time to waste and a succession of upcoming shows a new face was added to the line-up. Six times skateboarding champion and legend, Errol Strachan AKA Bong, was added to The Rudimentals. With this new line-up The Rudimentals are set with a full action plan on conquering hallowed ground.

Beginning 2005 saw The Rudimentals, drawing on their fan base to make a contribution towards the victims of the Tsunami disaster in South East Asia. Further developments entered the scheme of things as The Rudimentals pledged their support firmly behind empowerment communities for the production of merchandise, strengthening their philosophy of "music for the people" to new levels.

In 2005 The Rudimentals performed their first ever Splashy Fen music festival, performing alongside such established bands such as 340ml, Tumi and the Volume, Prime Circle and Watershed. Having established their reputation as a formidable act the year before, their fan base away from home grew even further, as they second visit to Kwazulu Natal later in 2005, at the Uprising Festival, proved that the Zulu kingdom state is smitten with The Rudies.

Without further a do The Rudimentals even achieved to get their music played on BBC Radio One, which is even a further major achievement.

2006 will see the launch of their 2nd album, "Set It Proper".

Lets face it, lap steel isnt your average guitarists choice of axe. Just ask South African lap steel player Richard Bruyns. "Besides the violin and the saxophone, it probably has the closest sound to the human voice," says Bruyns explaining his predilection for an instrument originally invented in Hawaii at the cusp of the 20th Century beforefinding its way into blues, country, rock, pop, African and Indian music.

One of only a handful of lap steel players working in South Africa, Bruyns guitar journey began back in high school when he discovered the blues by pure chance. "I heard something on the radio that I thought was jazz. So I asked my dad and he played me Weather Report. But it was too complex a sound and Id heard something raw. When he played me Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac I knew what it was - the blues. It actually turned out that it was Muddy Waters Id heard".

It was this intuitive appreciation for the bouncing thumbed bass lines, picked and sung melodies and foot-tapped drum sounds of pioneering acoustic blues men like Blind Lemon Jefferson and the Reverend Gary Davis that kick started his dream of becoming a solo guitarist. A stint managing a CD shop during the early to mid 90s saw Bruyns expanding his listening horizons to include jazz, bluegrass, country and beyond. Now a fully-fledged finger picking guitar fanatic he honed his practical and theoretical skills under the tutelage of eminent acoustic guitarist Tony Cox. Yet rather than get caught up in the chordal cul-de-sac of Western composition, in the tonal roots based structures of African guitarists like Ali Farka Toure and the slide guitar technique of Ry Cooder he recognised his fundamental desire to improvise.

It was a desire that would ultimately find a voice on the steel guitar. "Its a very free instrument," explains Bruyns "with more open tunings than your standard guitars. Listen to guys like Kelly Joe Phelps or Buddy Emmons and youll hear their sound is free. And of course, Indian guys likeDebashish Bhattacharyaare the masters."

It was this tonal freedom that he brought to Greg Donnellys underground alt.country band Waxy OConnor, experimental hip-hop collective the Original Evergreens and his own jam based combo Colossal Head. Following the fall out surrounding the Original Evergreens final CD release (1999), Bruyns took an hiatus from live performance, spending a few years as a PR for Sony Music to learn how the music industry functions before releasing his self-financed, independent debut album under the moniker of Saucetone in 2004.

"In many ways Saucetone is like a CV," informs Bruyns. Indeed, his collaborative outing with guitarist and programmer Antonio Orrico tunes the listener into an appetising cocktail of mellifluous acoustic blues, traditional Hawaiian folk and advert friendly neo-lounge flavours and proves to be an effective sonic calling card from a guitarist of rare idiomatic versatility.

photoWe are a three piece funk-rock band with tastes of punk and classic rock, blues and jazz all mixed in amongst ripping vocals and catchy rhythmic beats. Direct influences include bands like Smashing pumpkins, Sublime, RATM & Green Day.

We have Ciaron Nissen on guitars & vocals, Mark Ruthven on bass guitar & Alex Nebe on percussion.

We have known each other since childhood with mothers being friends from their college days. It may be said that we might just as well be family, and in some cases may be the reason for our good understanding of each other in terms of our music. We formed in Hout Bay at the beginning of January 2001, as a plan to perform at a music festival that our parents organize annually. From then we just kept jamming song that Ciaron had written in high school and a select few covers. Till we were asked to play at Dizzys in Camps Bay.

From then we have been gigging around the peninsula for the past 2yrs at venues such as Mercury Live and Lounge in town, Dirty Dicks in Hout Bay, the Independent Armchair Theater and Obz Caf in Observatory, Acoustic Caf in Muzimberg, & also featured at Houtstok 2001, 02 & head lined in 2004 (a private music festival) But the one of most importance is the Cheetas Battle of the Bands in Brackenfell, which we are proud to say we won with 316 points, above the second band Scarlet System who scored 275points.

Ciarons (born 12/06/83) first step into music was when he was given a steel string acoustic guitar for his birthday, with which he learnt the basics of guitar theory. From then he went to Witteberg Academy for Art and Music between 96 to 97. While still in school in Fish Hoek High School he joined a group of friends and sang in a battle of the bands. From then till the formation of Subnature he jammed with other friends just to keep the spirit alive.

As for Alex (born 24/05/84), he originally taught himself how to play guitar while doing a seven year sailing cruise across the Atlantic through Brazil, the Caribbean, and up the East coast of the USA. While in a local school in Maryland he took a six month course to extend his knowledge of guitar theory. Only to come back to South Africa in 2000, and realize that there was an abundance of guitarists but a shortage of drummers. And so he took on the task of teaching himself how to play the drums using an old kit that his Dad had bought for his band. His abilities are still without a single lesson.

Much the same could be said for his cousin Mark (born 27/10/85), but his musical back ground is slightly different. Mark has had a relatively normal life to start with. He drifted on and off playing the basics of piano taught to by his dad, but when the idea of starting a band and the need for a bassist arose he gave it a shot by playing the root notes on an electric guitar that Alex had bought in the States. The next step was when his dad brought home a starting kit including a 15 watt amp and four string bass guitar.

Most of the songs we play are written by Ciaron, and perfected during band practice where we all put in our little bits. In our experiences of the local music scene we have shared stages together with bands like Bed on Bricks, Southern Gypsy Queen, Sons of a Thousand Blues, Overgraze, Death by Chocolate, Askani (now called Scarlet System), Steve Van, 12th avenue, one good reason, Surreal & many, many others.

We are also the proud winners of a regional Battle Of The Bands that was held @ Cheetas in Brackenfell where we beat Scarlet System, the Sleepers and Downfall.

The Dirty Skirts are an energetic new band hailing from the inner city of Cape Town. Their take on indie rock smacks together an eclectic montage of punkish guitars, electronic beats, synths and samples, combined with irrepressible vocals and a super-octane live performance.

The band consists of: Jess (Jeremy de Tolly) on vocals, guitar and programming, Sumo (David Moffatt) on guitar and vocals, Agent Q (Quinton Van Rooyen) on Bass, and Markie D (Mark De Menezes) on drums mixing up a combination acoustic / electronic kit.

Up till now, The Dirty Skirts have continued to deliver inspired performances in and around South Africa, fuelling their reputation as a top live act to follow. Stage magazine dubbed their performances as "explosive" and referenced The Cure, Bauhaus and Kraftwerk in the eclectic montage of guitars and beats.

Amongst other, The Dirty Skirts have:

  • Been featured Cape Town artists at the Cell C Sound of the City along with Arno Carstens, Ready D, Freshlyground, and Louise Carver.
  • Performed at the Obs Festival with Bed on Bricks, Waddy Jones and Roswell Kings.
  • Headlined capacity shows at Mercury Live, Roxys, The Independent Armchair Theatre, Joburg Bar, Club + (188 Bree Street) and the Mercury Lounge in Cape Town.
  • Played as a featured artist with The Most Amazing Shows Culture Klap at the Grahamstown Festival.
  • Played at the Oppikopi Festival in August 2005.
  • Opened for South Africa's most well known rock band (Arno Carstens) at Mercury Live.
  • And launched their album to a packed Vegas Room.

In the media:

Despite their relatively brief tenure (first live performance was November 2004) they had their profile propelled to national status by the radio friendly single "Little Tsunami," which received intermittent spins on the primary national broadcaster (5FM) for several months. The silky but bruised sound, and uplifting lyrics of Little Tsunami won Blunt Magazine's Doc Martens Demo Competition, and has also featured on Cell C's radio promotion to uncover local talent on three separate occasions.

Media exposure has been accelerated by the launch of their debut EP in June 2005. The EP was launched at Vegas Room, where they put on scorching live performance to a packed house. The event attracted media attention form the likes of Blunt Magazine, SL and a camera crew from ETV who covered the show for Nicky Greenwalls The Showbiz Report (broadcast in late June 2005). The EP has recently been playlisted on 5FM, TUKS FM, East Coast Radio and various University radio stations. The track Set Me Alight climbed to number one on Mwebs SA MP3 chart, where it resided for five weeks. It has also climbed to #4 on UCT Radios local & international charts. Another driven rock track, Feeling the Pressure recently reached number one on the SA chart at TuksFM, and soared to #2 on their top 40.

Sound of the City, a showcase concert designed to highlight the influential sounds of each of South Africas major cities, featured The Dirty Skirts in November 2005. The performance was then broadcast to millions of South Africans on SABC 2.
